TOWN HALL RENOVATIONS
Third floor project nearly complete
It’s been many years in the making, but the third floor project is finally nearing completion. All it needs now is furniture.
The Memorial Building, known now as Vernon’s town hall, was constructed in 1889 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built by the citizens of the city of Rockville to commemorate the contributions of Civil War veterans from the community. The third floor of the building is characterized by its 40-foot tin ceilings and large windows.
The newly-completed space will house the mayor’s office, town council chambers, town administrator’s office, human resources and support staff for those offices. Once the space is officially open, town council meetings will no longer have to be held at the town’s senior center, next door to the town hall. ...more

Citizens Block Renovation Eyed

VERNON - — Late last month the town council killed a plan to use a mix of federal and local dollars to build a transportation center in downtown Rockville.
Now Mayor Jason L. McCoy and Town Administrator Christopher Clark are working on plans to use the federal money and about $500,000 in local money to instead renovate the dilapidated Citizens Block building on Park Place. more...

Urban walking trail on tap for downtown Rockville

By Kym Soper
Journal Inquirer
Published: Friday, April 25, 2008 11:10 AM EDT

VERNON — An urban walking trail through the downtown Rockville section of town highlighting the area’s history and mills is now in the works with volunteers and town staff hoping to have trail blazers hiking the concrete paths this fall.

Think Boston’s Freedom Trail but without the tri-corner hats and a nod to the Industrial Revolution rather than the colonial rebellion against the British.

Parks and Recreation Director Bruce Dinnie says the new footpath, stretching from Saxony Mill on West Street to Roosevelt Mill on East Main, will add to the town’s more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trail system. More...

Funds Likely On Way For Mill's Rebirth

Approval Is Expected On A $1.2 Million State Grant That Would Cover Demolition Costs And Cleanup Work

VERNON — - The final piece of the financial puzzle needed to restore a derelict mill in Rockville appears to be in place.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced Wednesday that a $1.2 million grant for work at the former Roosevelt Mills complex on East Main Street will be on the State Bond Commission's Jan. 25 agenda. Placement on the agenda typically means approval.

Joseph Vallone, a Westport architect who plans to convert the complex into 68 apartments and 10,000 square feet of commercial space known as Loom City Lofts, said Wednesday that the state money is crucial and would be used for demolition work and to...

2007 State Easter Eggs

The 2007 Easter Egg Collection continues the tradition that began in 1994 where each state sends a decorated egg to the White House for display. Artists from across the United States created the decorated eggs, which represent each state and the District of Columbia. Each year the artists vote amongst themselves to select the artist to create the following year's commemorative egg which is presented to the President and First Lady. The collection is coordinated by the American Egg Board. White House photos by Lynden Steele.
