Kudo’s to Bryan Flint for the website development!  If an agency wants to put something on the  website, they can get the information to an Executive Board member.  Once an agency is on the website, they can email Bryan with the information.

c. Grant update:

Alan Slobodien met with Vernon Public School administrators to collaborate on writing a federal Healthy Schools/healthy students grant.  At this point no money has been appropriated for it.  This is currently on hold.  No other grants have been found at this time.
d. Fundraising Subcommittee report:
Rich Tariff reported that the fundraising committee was having a hard time getting everyone together.  They have talked about different types of fundraisers such as:  a raffle, benefit dinner, and putting in a grant application to the Hartford Foundation.  The committee discussed the benefits of being able to hire a grant writer for the VCN.  Next committee meeting:  January 25th @ 12:30 at Charlie’s

e. Discussion of survey results:

Alan reported that feedback from the survey strongly indicates that members value the agency presentations in order to learn more about what agencies are doing.  Also, a number of people have put in requests to present about their agencies.  Alan suggested reserving a meeting to have an agency “fair” where people could bring pamphlets, etc. showcasing their agencies.  A suggestion was made to have the “fair” in June during the annual meeting.  A vote was taken and the majority of members raised their hands.  In addition the following survey results were noted: members want to keep the format of the meetings the same and people made it clear that they want the group to take ideas and put them into action so that the group can move forward.
f. Networking announcements:

~ Tracey Halstead reported that they are looking for a Vocational Instructor in their greenhouse.  High School diploma required and some college is preferred.  The job includes very heavy labor.  Contact Tracey at Hockanum Industries if interested.

~  Ana Maria Hernandez Alstrum  from East Hartford/Manchester Community Health Care reported that they will be having “Give Kids a Smile Day” on Feb. 3rd in East Hartford and Feb. 4th in Manchester.  They will provide free dental care for children 15 and under.

~  Betty O’Reilly at Community Child Guidance Clinic reported that they recently opened a new wing and they took over the old Teamworks program.  They have partial hospitalization and extended day programs from 6 – 12 year olds.

~  Planned Parenthood reported that a controversial right wing organization is protesting the condom key chains that they sell in the marketplace section of their website (www.ppct.org)  She welcomes anyone to visit them to find out about what they’re doing.

~  Tess McKenzie reported the their ESL playgroup was very successful.  They have open enrollment for the group and she left brochures for their winter playgroups.

~  John Ryan reported that the Vern Cook home is now closed.  It is in good condition and is for sale.

~ Vicky Rispoli reported that they will be having an adult prom on April 7th.  The theme is Stairway to Heaven and tickets are $40/each.  This is a fundraiser for the mission trips that some youth take during the summer. Vicky will have a flyer about the prom next month.

~  Dave Engelson reported that Hockanum Valley is holding a fundraising brunch at Aqua on February 12th.  You are able to go into the kitchen where the brunch is made to order.  Tickets are $28

~  Rich Tariff asked the group to raise their hands if they would attend a fundraiser for the VCN.  The majority of the members raised their hands.  Rich said that this money could be used to help other agencies or to hire a grant writer.

 5. Agency Presentation:

Officer Chuck Hicking gave a presentation about his role as the community officer in Vernon.  He said that his goal is to serve the businesses and families in the downtown area and to serve as a mediator for families in distress.  Chuck also talked in great detail about the gang issue that is resurfacing in town and the two known gangs which are the Young Bloods and the Rolling 20 Crips.  He is working to educate people about not taking things into their own hands.  Instead they should call his office so that they can compile information and respond to the complaint.  They need the public to make the complaint so that they can then act on it.  Alan asked Officer Hicking how the VCN could help and suggested a spring cleanup.  Officer Hicking said that he restarted the Neighborhood Watch and he has about 30 interested families.  He will let the group know when a clean up is scheduled.

6. Open Discussion:
~  Alan said that he will contact someone for the next agency presentation

~  Gerry Griffin won the raffle for a gift certificate for Charlies

~  A discussion about the next meeting date was held.  There was some concern that the next meeting date falls on winter vacation.  There weren’t many people who would be affected by the vacation.   The next meeting will be held on February 24th at 9am as previously scheduled.

 Meeting adjorned at 10:45

Respectfully submitted by Kim McTighe, Vernon Youth Services
