General
Assembly approves $1.2 million for Memorial Building in bonding bill
State
Representative Claire Janowski (D-Vernon) is pleased to announce that the
General Assembly has approved a bond package for the coming fiscal year that
includes significant funding for Rockville’s Memorial Building. The
$1.2 million will allow the completion of the third floor restoration, which is
characterized by 40-foot ceilings, large historic windows and tin ceilings.
Once completed, the third floor would include a large community gallery
for public use.
“This
will be a huge shot in the arm for downtown Rockville,” Rep. Janowski said.
“The Memorial Building project is vital to the revitalization and
redevelopment efforts for historic downtown Rockville and I’m pleased to have
secured this funding.”
The
Memorial Building was constructed in 1889 and is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. The building is
home to the Grand Army of the Republic Hall that includes the New England Civil
War Museum and the O’Connell-Chapman Historical Library.
The building is also the seat of town government housing the Mayor’s
Office, Probate Court and Registrar of Voters.
The
Memorial Building third floor restoration project, which began several years
ago, has been hampered by a lack of funding and Rep.
Janowski was asked to pursue state dollars to facilitate completion. Rep.
Janowski said, “I am appreciative and thankful
that Speaker of the House Jim Amann and the legislative leadership was sensitive
to my request and placed Vernon's needs on the front burner by fast-tracking
this funding.”
Claire
Janowski was elected in 2000 as State Representative in the 56th
District, which is located within the boundaries of Vernon & Rockville.
Claire is the House Chair of the Executive and Legislative Nominations
committee and serves on the Transportation and General Law committees.
